Field Link Portable Programmer for Driving works with all Castle Link compatible car controllers including: Sidewinder Micro, Mamba 25, Mamba Micro Pro, Sidewinder 3, Mamba Max (only connects using the throttle cable. You must upgrade the Mamba Max to software version 1.23 or higher with your Windows PC to enable throttle cable USB connectivity), Mamba Max Pro, and Mamba Monster (all versions).

Requires USB 2.0 on a Windows PC running Castle Link software.
Tech notes:

Field Link card cannot change settings on controller series that do not have the listed settings. See settings compatibility chart above for details.

Macintosh users may take advantage of software such as Parallels Desktop, VMware Fusion, or Apple's Boot Camp along with Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. to run the Castle Link software, provided the Macintosh has an Intel processor. Full Castle Link Functionality
This Field Link portable programmer can also act as a Castle Link USB Programming kit, allowing you to connect your controller to your Windows™ PC for easy programming. Adjustable settings include:

Access expanded programming and parameters for Castle controllers
Access to all firmware updates, including added features sets released from Castle Engineering, at no charge.
Intuitive Demo Mode capability
Ability to default ESC to factory settings
Ability to save setup profiles for later use
Ability to download and view data logs (on applicable controllers)

Specific Usage Notes:

Thunderbird Controllers
Thunderbird controllers have fewer settings than may be represented on the Field Link. The Field Link will simply skip over these unsupported option rows.

CC BEC and CC BEC Pro
CC BEC and CC BEC Pro have adjustable output voltages only. Use the BEC VOLTAGE row on the Field Link to change their output value.

CC BEC
CC BEC does not supply output power when connected to the Castle Link or Field Link. It must therefore be powered with a Y harness like the HV ESC in diagram 2 for field use. The motor pack is not required for this specific setup.

CC BEC Pro
To use the Field Link you must use the adapter cable provided with your CC BEC Pro. Connect one side to the Field Link and the other side to the “Link Port” on your CC BEC Pro.

The Castle Parallel Wire Harness with Deans Ultra connectors allows you to connect two battery packs in parallel, combining the capacity of your battery packs. For example: two 3s (11.1V) 6000mAh packs will have the capacity of 12,000mAh when combined with this harness, but remain at a 3s (11.1V) voltage.

Note: You must always use identically prepared packs with this harness. Both packs must be fully charged and properly balanced. Both packs must be made by the same manufacturer, have the same C rating, same number of cells (2s,3s,etc.), and both must have the same capacity. Failure to observe this warning will result in damage to your batteries.

So how do you improve upon the already awesome CM36 series? Work with motor guru Steve Neu to change the motor from a slotless design to one with a 1.4 inch diameter slotted stator. Then change the single neodymium rotor magnet from a 2 pole donut to a 4 magnet, four pole rotor for more torque. Throw in better manufacturing, high quality bearings and a removable end bell and you have the new 1406 series of high performance motors from Castle. The end result is an all new motor that cranks out 30% more torque with all the efficiency and endurance that Castle is known for. These motors are bolt in upgrades for most all 1/10 applications and come in the now-standard ratings of 4,600kv, 5,700kv, 6,900kv and 7,700 kv for easy transition for dealers and customers alike.

Double up on power!

The Polarized Series Wire Harness allows you to connect two battery packs in series, combining the voltage of your batteries. For example: two 3S (11.1v) packs will have the output voltage of 6S (22.2v) when connected with this harness.

This harness is factory-fitted with 4.0mm Polarized Castle Connectors. You will need a matching polarized male connector soldered to your ESC and matching polarized female connectors soldered to your batteries.

Our 40mm fan assembly is fitted to a wide range of Castle ESCs including Phoenix Edge 160 HVf, Mamba XL2, Mamba XL X, and Talon HV 120. Includes the fan (w/wire), mounting plate, and four (4) mounting screws.

Instructions for Talon 120 HV Assembly

Remove the 40mm fan, fan cover, and screws from the package.
Place the fan onto the top of the ESC heatsink with the open side of the fan facing away from the ESC.
Make sure that the fan wire exits the same direction as the ESC receiver cable.
Align the fan cover over the fan with the Castle word logo facing away from the ESC.
Align the holes for the fan cover and the fan with the threaded holes on the ESC heatsink.
Place a screw in any one of the four mounting holes and use a 2.5mm hex wrench to tighten to the heatsink.
Repeat step 6 for the remaining screws.

Instructions for Phoenix Edge 160 HVf, and Mamba XL2 Assembly

Remove the 40mm fan, fan cover, and screws from the package.
With a P1 Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the 4 assembly screws that hold the plastic housing together.
Carefully remove the top plastic piece ONLY. DO NOT remove the top heatsink, thermally conductive adhesive holds the heatsink tightly against the ESC. If this bond becomes loose or gets damaged the ESC could potentially fail.
With the back of the screwdriver, press the fan cover and the fan out of the plastic housing. This may take some force, be careful to not damage the plastic housing.
Place the new fan cover into the plastic housing with the Castle word logo facing away from the ESC.
Place the new 40mm fan into the plastic housing with the open side of the fan up against the fan cover. Make sure the fan power wires are exiting out of the molded wire relief in the plastic housing.
Once the fan and fan cover are in place, align the plastic housing back onto the ESC and place the same screws into the housing that were previously removed. The four M3 socket head screws that came with the 40mm fan kit will not be used for this ESC.

NOTE: This fan does NOT work on the regular Phoenix Edge 160HV.

To Remove The Receiver Harness:

Place slight outward pressure with thumb on the retaining clip (Figure 1).
Grip the harness close to the 6 pin connector and pull gently, at a slight angle towards the ESC, to remove the harness from the ESC pin header (Figure 2).

Note: Do not yank or forcefully pull harness out of ESC. May cause damage to ESC or harness.

To Replace The Receiver Harness:

Place slight outward pressure with thumb on the retaining clip (Figure 1).
Following the color coded wiring diagram provided on the Mamba Micro X label, place the 6 pin connector into the ESC pin header (Figure 3).

Note: The harness must be plugged into the pin headers furthest from the ESC/input capacitors. Misalignment of the harness will prevent the ESC from operating. Be sure that the brown wire is plugged in next to the negative (-) black power wire.
Gently press on the 6 pin connector to fully engage with the ESC pin header, a slight click should be heard when secured. You may need to use a flat head screw driver or tweezers to ensure the connector snaps into place.

Sensor Harness Connection Instructions

Remove the sensor dust cover from the ESC. (Replace dust cover if changing back to a sensorless motor.)
Insert the Sensor Harness into the ESC, orienting the Sensor Harness to match the ESC label.
Connect your sensored motor wires to the ESC. (Connect A to A, B to B and C to C.) Motor wire orientation is important; to change motor direction use Castle Link.

Now With a Sensored Motor!
The Mamba Monster X is now paired with our brand new sensored 15xx series motors. We have taken our award winning 15xx series motors and added sensor capabilities. So now you can all of the torque and performance you know and love and have even more control! We still use the same high quality components as our sensorless motors, such as ultra-thin stator laminations, high temperature sintered neodymium magnet and high RPM ABEC3 bearings.

Why sensored? Some drivers and applications are better suited for sensored motors. Some drivers need smoother throttle control in racing environments. When coming out of a corner a sensorless motor may not provide optimal throttle control and can cause the motor power to surge a bit. With sensored motors the throttle will feel smoother and more linear which allows for more precise throttle management. If you are simply bashing and not racing on a track you will most likely not see the full benefits from a sensored operation.

The Auxiliary Advantage.
Mamba Monster X features the addition of a new, programmable Auxiliary Wire that allows you to make “on-the-go” adjustments to several settings such as torque control, and max throttle, and fine-tune the performance of your ESC right from the transmitter using an auxiliary channel on the receiver. The AUX wire function is disabled by default but is programmable via Castle Link. Once you have programmed the functionality of the AUX wire, that setting can then be adjusted on-the-go from a compatible transmitter.

Data Logging
Mamba Monster X can capture and record performance data from your last couple of runs, commonly referred to as data logging. This data can be downloaded via the Castle Link USB programmer; you can use the Quick Connect Duo (sold separately) to allow you to quickly access the ESC's receiver wire without having to disconnect from your receiver. You can then analyze this data and make adjustments to the ESC to maximize both performance and battery life.

Telemetry Capability
Mamba Monster X is telemetry ready, which means owners of the Futaba T4PX Transmitters can purchase the Castle Creations Telemetry Link for S.BUS2. Real-time data such as ESC temperature, voltages and RPM can be monitored to ensure performance advantages and spare you the “unknown” parameters that all R/C enthusiasts experience at some point. Telemetry data provides another level of protection and can increase performance.

The 1512-1800kv version is capable of 2S to 6S LiPo and is perfect for 1/8 scale buggies and on-road cars weighing up to 9lbs (with batteries, ready-to-run). Knowledge is Power!

Maybe you want to know the voltage of your onboard battery(s), the RPM the motor is turning or the temperature of your ESC. In this day and age R/C is not just one way communication anymore. Traditional radio systems transmit signals from the controller to the receiver, but Telemetry-capable systems also send real-time data from your model back to your transmitter. The X-BUS Telemetry Link was developed based on communication protocol disclosed from Spektrum® for use with specific Spektrum® radios and compatible Castle Creations ESC’s. Telemetry data can be displayed on the transmitter screen, or notify you when a defined threshold is exceeded, (battery voltage, ESC temperature, etc.) you can configure a vibration or sound alert from the radio. Let’s start from the beginning.

Why should I integrate Telemetry into my models?
Telemetry has the potential not only to improve the safety of our models by monitoring battery voltages, ESC temperature, and other critical parameters, but it also creates other opportunities to get even more fun out of flying because it essentially reduces the risk of “unknown” inevitable crashes. Think of the benefits to be had from alarms that will sound to warn you if your ESC is running hot or if your receiver battery is running unexpectedly low.

Compatible Castle ESC
The ESC must have the ability to accept a bi-directional communication protocol that gives it the ability to transmit real-time telemetry feedback. This feature is called Link Live™ and needs to be enabled on compatible ESCs using Castle Link™. Click here to view the Castle ESC Compatibility Chart.
Note: The Telemetry Link will not work if the ESC is programmed for Multirotor or External Governor Mode due to the higher PWM frequency.

Compatible Spekrtrum X-BUS Radio

Now, let’s see the mechanical integration.
Below is an example of an X-BUS Telemetry Link set-up for Surface, Air and Internal Governor Systems. You can see how the Telemetry Link (about 5.4 inches long) connection is made between the Castle ESC and the Spektrum® X-Bus™ receiver and Telemetry Module/System.

And how about this….there is no requirement for additional Telemetry Sensors for your Spektrum® radio when using the X-BUS Telemetry Link. There are 7 specific data points available* and you can enable/disable to your liking through Castle Link™.

Spektrum® X-Bus Telemetry Link Data Points
Battery Voltage You will be able to see the voltage state of your battery during flight and respond appropriately to deteriorating conditions or alarms you’ve programmed in your radio.
Battery Current Compatible controllers will transmit the instantaneous current draw of the system. You can use this information to reduce the load to prevent an over-current shutdown.
Motor Power Output This is the percentage of full power your ESC is delivering to your motor.
RPM Ensure you are within acceptable parameters, without the use of a tachometer.
BEC Voltage Monitor your BEC voltage and its stability to the RX even under different loads from different servos.
ESC Temperature ESC temperature monitoring can eliminate a potential thermal shut down.

Mamba X setups frequently hit 100+ amps in peaks and not all LiPos are created equal. Surge ratings should never be used to determine a pack's suitability for a brushless application. Recommended battery capacity for 1:8th scale vehicles is 5000mAh. We recommend using 30C continuous discharge or higher LiPo batteries (or high quality 25C batteries such as Traxxas® Power Cell).
Our experience suggests using only mild gear ratios with NiMH cells. Do not attempt to use NiMH cells in extreme setups.
Applying voltages higher than 25.2V will cause irreparable damage to ESC.

Water Resistant Design: The sensor board is coated with silicone conformal coating to protect the sensors from moisture. The sensor connections are not water resistant; water can cause signal loss which could result in loss of sensored capabilities. WHY SENSORED?

Drivers in all applications demand clean starts when coming off the line. Crawler fans require high-precision low speed control and torque for climbing, racers need precision and predictability, and dragsters don’t have a millisecond to spare. To achieve all of these performance demands and more, we have integrated rotor position sensor technology with our improved high power and high efficiency motor design. Through the use of our sensors, the position of the rotor is always known by the ESC. This eliminates the possibility of encountering cogging or inconsistency during startup. Users will experience PRECISE throttle control and BUTTERY SMOOTH starts plus the RAW POWER and LONGER RUN TIMES that our highly efficient motors produce.

EFFICIENCY IS KEY

The higher the efficiency of a motor the more power it can produce without overheating, which allows you to safely run higher gear ratios. The higher the efficiency of a motor, the less power it takes to produce the same output power, which allows you to run longer on a single charge. The higher the efficiency of the motor, the less energy it turns into heat; keeping it cool under extreme loads. Efficiency equals performance.
RELIABILITY CAN’T BE IGNORED

Without a robust and reliable design, efficiency will only go so far. RC enthusiasts love pushing their equipment to the edge. The Castle engineers know this and spared no expense when developing a design that could hold up to the harsh conditions that the RC community will throw at it. Oversized NMB bearings and vibration dampening system ensure the longest bearing life possible. High-strength, high-temperature grade neodymium sintered magnets combined with a high-strength Kevlar wrap ensures the integrity of the rotor is not compromised during harsh running conditions. Our proprietary winding techniques allow us to produce a stator assembly that is the lowest possible resistance, resulting in a cooler running motor. A cooler motor has a longer lifetime. Construction of our motor required careful component selection; each verified through internal testing to ensure the highest efficiency possible. Our experienced, in-house engineering team, located in Olathe, Kansas, has spent countless hours simulating and developing the most efficient design. Development includes magnetic simulations, custom winding techniques, and rigorous, real-world testing of the final product.

During a 5-minute constant power dyno test the results were clear. When producing 200W of power, our competitors’ motors increased in temperature over 20% more than the Castle 1406 Sensored motor. When producing 300W of power, it wasn’t even close, their temperature climbed at over twice the rate of the Castle motor and then overheated in around two minutes while the Castle motor powered through and completed the test. _Click here for graph_

WHY SENSORED?

Drivers in all applications demand clean starts when coming off the line. RELIABILITY CAN’T BE IGNORED

Without a robust and reliable design, efficiency will only go so far. RC enthusiasts love pushing their equipment to the edge. The Castle engineers know this and spared no expense when developing a design that could hold up to the harsh conditions that the RC community will throw at it. Oversized NMB bearings and vibration dampening system ensure the longest bearing life possible. High-strength, high-temperature grade neodymium sintered magnets combined with a high-strength Kevlar wrap ensures the integrity of the rotor is not compromised during harsh running conditions. Our proprietary winding techniques allow us to produce a stator assembly that is the lowest possible resistance, resulting in a cooler running motor. A cooler motor has a longer lifetime. Don’t Be Afraid to Get Wet!

Sidewinder 3 with 1406-6900Kv sensored* brushless motor is the perfect waterproof** combo for 1:10 scale on-road vehicles weighing less than 4lbs running up to 2S LiPo***. It sports updated circuitry for faster response time and improved reliability. This combo now comes with our new sensored* motor. While the sensored capabilities of the motor cannot be utilized with the Sidewinder 3, users will benefit as the sensored motor is rebuildable (parts available soon), and this design even allows modelers to replace damaged motor wires. The Sidewinder 3 Combo will give you exceptional response and performance right of the box!

This combo includes a Sidewinder 3 ESC and 1406-6900Kv sensored* motor. The 1406-6900kv motor is a great upgrade for 1/10th scale on-road cars for 2s use. Tech Notes: Not all LiPos are created equal, and surge ratings should never be used to determine a pack’s suitability for a brushless application. Use the CONTINUOUS C rating only. Brushless setups frequently hit 100+ amps in peaks. We strongly suggest using 5,000 mAh or larger LiPo cells with a discharge rating of at least 30C (or high quality 25C batteries such as Traxxas® Power Cells®). Our experience suggests using only mild gear ratios with NiMH cells. Do not attempt to use NiMH cells in extreme setups.

Set-up instructions:

Download the interface software from our Software area.
Plug the Castle Link into the receiver lead on your controller and attach the mini USB cable included in the kit.
Connect the USB cable to your PC.
